A son of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie has told a court he is ready to testify against his father in the ongoing Shakahola case, saying the family has suffered greatly since Mackenzie's arrest.
The young man said life changed dramatically for the family after the suspected cult leader was taken into custody. According to him, the burden of the case has affected family members emotionally and socially, forcing them to live under intense public scrutiny.
He told the court that speaking out was not an easy decision but one he believes is necessary in the search for truth and justice. He said he wants to share what he knows about events surrounding the Shakahola tragedy and the teachings that were promoted within the family.
The son also claimed that some of his siblings still follow their father's teachings despite the allegations and ongoing court proceedings. He expressed concern that those beliefs continue to influence members of the family.
His remarks came as hearings in the Shakahola case continued, with prosecutors seeking to establish what happened in the vast forest area where hundreds of people are believed to have died after allegedly following extreme religious instructions.
Paul Mackenzie, who has denied wrongdoing, remains at the centre of one of Kenya's most shocking criminal investigations. The case has drawn national and international attention because of the scale of the deaths linked to the Shakahola tragedy.
The son's willingness to testify could add a new dimension to the proceedings, as prosecutors continue to gather evidence and witness accounts in their efforts to uncover the full extent of what happened.
