Speaking on Monday night, February 23, Munya termed the image fake and misleading, insisting it was digitally generated.
He questioned the authenticity of the photo, arguing that it was impossible for him to have been at State House while he was publicly engaged elsewhere.
Munya stated that at the time the photo was allegedly taken, he was in Kisii County participating in political activities alongside other opposition leaders.
He dismissed the image as a desperate attempt to create the impression that he had crossed political lines.
An ally of the PNU leader, Chege Majuice, echoed the claims, accusing individuals aligned with the government of spreading misinformation.
He argued that the viral image was part of a broader propaganda effort aimed at weakening the opposition’s unity.
On Monday, Munya joined United Opposition figures led by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i for a tour of Kisii County and Nyamira County.
The leaders held several stopovers to rally support and popularize their political agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The controversy comes shortly after the Jubilee Party announced a cooperation agreement with the Party of National Unity. Under the deal, PNU agreed not to field a presidential candidate in 2027 and instead endorsed Matiang’i for the top seat.
In a statement, Jubilee described Matiang’i as a disciplined and results-oriented leader, citing his record in public service.
The party said the partnership aims to revive the economy, restore integrity in public institutions, empower youth, and promote accountable governance.
Munya reiterated that he remains firmly aligned with the opposition and warned the public against believing manipulated content shared online.
