Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has sparked heated online debate after posting an image of the Kenyan national flag on his X account as the country marked the second anniversary of the deadly 2024 Gen Z protests. The post featuring the iconic black red and green flag with the Maasai shield and crossed spears quickly attracted thousands of views and divided opinion on its true intention.

Sifuna who leads the Linda Mwananchi movement has frequently been seen carrying the Kenyan flag during political rallies a gesture his supporters view as a powerful call for unity patriotism and accountability in governance. His latest post came at a time of heightened political tension as demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests unfolded across the country.

Supporters of the Nairobi Senator interpreted the flag post as consistent with his established brand as a defender of national values who frames opposition politics beyond partisan lines. To them the gesture reinforced the message that protests are not anti-Kenya but pro-citizen a narrative that has resonated strongly with young Kenyans since the 2024 uprising.

Critics however dismissed the move as calculated political theater designed to tap into Gen Z energy ahead of the 2027 elections. They argued that opposition figures were strategically positioning themselves to benefit from the anniversary demonstrations rather than genuinely championing the cause of the victims.

Two years after the anti-Finance Bill protests that resulted in over 120 deaths and forced major government concessions Kenyans were once again on the streets. Gen Z groups and opposition factions called for peaceful commemorations marches and stay-at-home protests to demand justice for victims accountability for police brutality and an end to bad governance.

Sifuna rose to prominence as ODM's Secretary-General before his association with the Linda Mwananchi movement — a reformist faction within ODM — saw him lead nationwide tours and mobilize crowds across the country.

He was elected Nairobi Senator in 2022 and has since positioned himself as one of the fiercest critics of the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.

His flag-bearing history suggests a deliberate effort to frame opposition politics as love for the nation rather than division.

The Linda Mwananchi movement had earlier signaled plans for multi-day protest actions from June 24 to 26 framing them as a continuation of the fight to protect ordinary Kenyans from perceived bad governance and economic mismanagement.
