Kisii Governor Simba Arati has claimed that leaders within the emerging united opposition already have a preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a political gathering, Arati alleged that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is being misled by some opposition figures who are not genuinely backing his potential presidential bid.
The governor argued that while Matiang’i has been engaging in consultations and building alliances, certain leaders have already settled on another candidate behind the scenes, casting doubt on the sincerity of their support.
Arati warned that such political manoeuvres risk undermining trust within the opposition coalition, which has been positioning itself as a united front against President William Ruto in the next election cycle.
He urged transparency among opposition leaders, saying Kenyans deserve honesty from those seeking to offer alternative leadership to the current administration.
The Kisii governor further noted that internal deception could weaken the opposition’s chances, especially if key figures feel sidelined or used for political expediency.
His remarks come amid increased political activity across the country, with several opposition figures holding rallies and consultations aimed at consolidating support and shaping a formidable alliance.
Matiang’i, who has recently re-emerged in the public political space, has been viewed by some as a strong contender due to his previous role in government and perceived firm leadership style.
However, Arati’s claims are likely to fuel fresh debate within opposition ranks, raising questions about unity, trust, and the credibility of ongoing coalition-building efforts.
Political analysts say the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the opposition can maintain cohesion or fall into internal rivalry ahead of the high-stakes 2027 contest.
