Tension gripped Mombasa as hundreds of youths gathered at Tononoka Grounds in a largely spontaneous rally, marking a sharp contrast to a similar event held a fortnight ago that had been organised by a rival political faction.
Unlike the earlier Linda Ground faction meeting led by Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, which saw structured mobilisation of supporters, yesterday’s gathering appeared loosely coordinated, with young people dominating both attendance and messaging.
Eyewitnesses reported the presence of armed youths patrolling sections of the city, raising fears among residents and traders. Businesses in affected areas operated cautiously, with some closing early amid concerns over possible unrest.
At the rally, speakers openly criticised President William Ruto’s administration, accusing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government of economic mismanagement and failing to address the rising cost of living affecting ordinary Kenyans.
Several youth leaders took to the stage, expressing frustration over unemployment and what they described as shrinking economic opportunities. They urged fellow citizens to remain united in demanding accountability from the current regime.
Calls for political change featured prominently, with some speakers urging voters to remove President Ruto from office in the 2027 General Election, framing it as a necessary step toward economic recovery.
Security agencies maintained a presence in parts of Mombasa, closely monitoring the situation to prevent escalation. However, no major incidents were reported by the time of publication.
